We’re guessing that, like us, you’re all caught up in the cuteness of all of the adoptable kittens out there, right? Who wouldn’t be? But have you ever considered the benefits of adopting an adult cat? Following are just a few:
- An older cat has already developed their personality – no surprises there! What you adopt, is what you get.
- Adult cats are fun and playful but not as wild or hyperactive as kittens. An older cat will be less demanding of your time
- Kittens are not a great match for young children. Both kittens and young kids can play rough without meaning to.
- Kittens will get lonely (and potentially destructive) when left alone for longer periods of time. Something to consider if you work outside the home.
- Many adult cats are happy to be an “only cat”. If you’re looking for only one, adults are the way to go. If calm and quiet are your thing, an adult cat is the way to go for a less active home environment.
- Older cats have better litter box habits than kittens, who may use the litter box for many activities besides the intended purpose! Yikes!
- Lastly, consider your own age – what would become of the cat when you’re no longer able to care for it? While many people think their families would take their animals, this is one of the biggest reasons animals are relinquished to shelters to face uncertain and confusing futures.
The satisfaction of knowing that you have saved an unwanted, abandoned and lonely cat from an uncertain (or worse) future, is worth its weight in gold!
